USB interrupt sharing

Some USB controllers can have a tendency to "hang" the system if the USB interrupt is shared with an add-in card. The time taken to hang seems to depend on the level of USB activity.
Changing the interrupt used by the add-in card will cure the problem. Please follow the instructions below.

To check which add-in card shares the USB interrupt;

Right click on My Computer > Click properties > Click Device manager

In the Computer Properties dialog box above, look for "USB Universal Host Controller".

In this case, you can see that the USB Universal Host Controller shares interrupt 9 with an Ethernet adaptor add-in card.

On your PC, look to see what add-in card also uses the same interrupt.

Note that the devices with a blue screen computer next to them are system devices and not add-in devices.

The easiest fix is to move the add-in card to another slot. Some cards will need to reinstall their drivers so check you have the drivers available.

Motherboards using the VIA chipset

Microsoft has developed a USB "patch".

PCI to USB cards

PCI add-in cards that provide additional USB ports are available for situations where you need additional USB ports.

Typically they sell for less than $25 (on "special" they can be under $15).

All of these cards use one of three different chips for the controller.

If you buy one of these cards please ensure that the controller chip is by Opti or Lucent.
